Some patients prefer to see a woman for digestive and rectal concerns, and that preference is entirely reasonable. Dr. Sheryl Rosa-Cruz is a board-certified female gastroenterologist at Orlando Gastroenterology, seeing patients across our four Orlando-area clinics.
Gastroenterology involves conversations and examinations that many people find difficult to raise at all — bowel habits, rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids, incontinence, pelvic and abdominal pain. Some patients simply feel more comfortable discussing those things with a woman, and some delay care for years rather than raise them with anyone.
That delay is the real risk. Preferring a female physician is a practical matter of comfort, and we would rather you come in and be seen than put it off.
Dr. Sheryl Rosa-Cruz, MD is a board-certified gastroenterologist who trained at Universidad de Guadalajara. She provides the full range of general gastroenterology care, including colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.
Dr. Rosa-Cruz is fluent in Spanish and English, so Spanish-speaking patients can discuss their symptoms in their own language rather than through a family member.
Screening now starts at 45 for people at average risk. Women are just as affected by colorectal cancer as men and are somewhat more likely to postpone screening. If the reason you have put it off is that you would rather the procedure were done by a woman, that is a solvable problem — ask for Dr. Rosa-Cruz when you call.
For eligible, generally healthy patients we also offer direct access colonoscopy, which skips the preliminary office visit.
Orlando Gastroenterology has four Central Florida clinics: MetroWest Orlando, East Orlando, Kissimmee and Clermont. Call our office and we will tell you where and when Dr. Rosa-Cruz is next available.
